My friend and I recently dined at Wool Growers. I was very satisfied with the scampi I ordered. However, my friend who ordered the roast lamb was very disappointed. She requested the lamb to be rare. When it arrived it was so over cooked that she couldn't eat it. She tried to find any pink in the meat but was unsuccessful. The kitchen should know the difference between rare and well done. When she told the waitress her entree was not tender...far from it...the waitress said.."hmmm that's unusual" and walked away. My friend also mentioned it to the hostess who didn't have much to say either. Our bill was over $60.00 not including the gratuity. A free dessert could have been offered at the least. This really left a bad taste in our mouth (pun intended). We've decided to try Benji's next time.

This is a classic Bakersfield spot. Not only that, but you'll get have a unique experience much of the world misses out on: A family-style Basque meal. I've been visiting Woolgrowers half my life (20 years) and it is definitely one of my favorite spots. The food is classic, and therefore the menu has hardly had to change. Pickled tongue was introduced to me here, and I cannot imagine a life without it :)

Basque food set in a family dining atmosphere. Make sure to save a lot of room because the food is not only really good, it is plentiful.

I admire this restaurant! They offer first-cleass dishes, their menu is rich, The chef in that spot is well trained, I enjoy very much trying all their food. The dishes are consistently good, the attitude towards the customers is efficient. I often go to this place and I was never unhappy. I recommend it with no hesitation.

Very disappointed in Friday’s to-go order of a 4 person setup with a side of pickled tongue($79). When arrived at 4 pm to pick it up was told it had been given to someone else and would have to wait for it to be put together again. Fifteen minutes later it came out “cold” and when brought home was missing the salad. Called number again and was assured that it would be taken care of (adjusted) on my credit card charge. Between the cold food, long wait to be put together again, and missing food, this was definitely not the Woolgrowers I am accustomed to visiting. Has it changed ownership or management lately? Very disappointed.

First of all don't eat Anything for about 4 hours before eating here. This was my first time. They start with thin sliced hard cheese and Pyrenees rolls O.M.G. Then about 5 courses. beans, soup, salad, pickled tounge, lamb stew. I can't remember the order. Then fried chicken, pilaf, green beans, and between that rolls and butter. Then desserts. EVERYTHING was cooked to perfection. With Love.

Went to dinner for my birthday they went from a 5 star to a 1 star real quick and its sad. Prices went sky rocket and you get less and have to pay more for what you originally would. They said its because the price of meat went up and they had to cut corners. Then why do I get charged more and get less. 100 for 2 people has never happened in my life there. And they don't tell you till after you order and ask if you want to pay more.

I love all the Basque restaurants in the Old Town Kern part of Bakersfield, they all have their own unique feel and character. Wool Growers is no exception! The staff are so warm and really make you feel like family, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is exactly what you're looking for in a family style restaurant. What more can I say? You can't go wrong with Wool Growers!

Was recommended from a coworker who knew we were going to bakersfield. It was and excellent recommendation, you get good bang for your buck here. We stopped in for lunch. The pastrami sandwich was awesome and my wife had JC special sandwich and that was great too. It came with soup, salad, bread, beans and salsa. I ordered a side of the pickled beef tounge and it was better than I could have ever imagined, you have to try it. I would recommend getting a reservation we tried to go a time before and it was really busy. They are pretty quick though with getting food out to you.

A Kern County institution that keeps the standards high and doesn't compromise. Nothing is better than getting together with large crew, going to Woolgrowers main dining room and doing a long long meal with all of the extras. And a close second is to slip into the bar for a lamb sandwich and a glass of wine with JD the bartender. Wonderful.

I celebrated my PhD last night in this gorgeous place. I am glad to say that we passed a outstanding evening and the restaurant was indeed one of the reasons for this outstanding celebration. The crew collaborated in a gorgeous style, the cuisine was very good and my buddies were very joyful. We shall surely visit again for more joyful events. thanks very much.

I heard about this place through many old timers. Since I was in Barkersfield I had to check it out. Plenty of parking and this place fills up fast. We were one of the first through the door. People who came after us had a 1 hour wait. They had no problem in waiting. Wool Growers is all about the lamb. In not a big fan of lamb but I sampled some of my friends and it melted in my mouth. I had the fried chicken which was delicious. The meal starts off with many side dishes served family style. You get soup, salad, bread, beans and salsa. I was full before our main course came with with the side dishes they served us. After our meal we decided to go exploring and look at all the historic pictures. They also have a huge banquet room in the back which was full for bigger parties. The place is historic and very clean. The staff made the experience worth it. The have no problem explaining any of the dishes and making you feel right at home.

Classic Basque family style restaurant. This is a go-to place for us in Bakersfield. Food is plentiful. All the sides are prepared for the table, called the "set up", and then individual entrees can be ordered if you want one. It's popular so while parking is free, get there early to get close. Good food, family atmosphere, good times.

I hadn't been there in several years. I was surprised how high the set-up is now. They almost force you into at least one of the lesser expensive entrees. As always, the food was good but it also seemed that they were quick to move you from one course to the next to get you out the door faster. I was looking forward to another bowl of soup but looked around & it had already been taken away--with the beans & the salsa--on a Monday!

I had never had Basque food but I came thru Bakersfield and found a bunch of restaurants who specialize in this. Sometimes they do only one seating per night, say, at 7pm. This place doesn't do that. You can sit for lunch or dinner any time. I arrived at about 8:30pm. I believe they stop seating at 9pm.Every meal comes with cabbage soup where you get beans and salsa. Believe me and trust the server: mix the three.....it's the most delicious, hardy thing I've tasted. It was a cold, rainy CA night when I ate this. I can't even explain how much it hit the spot. Then you get a garden salad with a side of green beans, a tomatos and green pepper salad mixed with a vinaigrette and French fries. On top of that, you get an entree. It's so much food and nothing exotic but incredibly tasty. Please do yourself a favor and stop here. This place feels like a real home made meal and the ambiance is the same.

I was excited to go to a Basque restaurant - so chose this based on reviews. Not sure how it merits this high a rating? No complaints about the service, they were very busy and my waitress was very nice and attentive.I had the Oxtail Stew -because where else am I going to get that? I didn't care for it at all - perhaps that's just my taste - but it had a fair amount of bones and mystery fatty/inedible elements. The rest of the meal - a MASSIVE amount of food was from great to really poor. Pickled tongue - never had that before - wouldn't have considered it - was delicious. Bread, soup and salad - good. Then there were the things that seemed like they came right off the grocery store shelf - canned corn, spaghetti like Chef Boyardee - I'm not really sure why they even serve those things except to increase the volume of food. And fries? Why?2 stars because overall the meal was poor and the good service didn't make up for that. Doubt I'll ever go back, not even for the pickled tongue.

Basque at it's best. This is where the locals go. Ask for the "set up" and don't shy away from the pickled tongue. I had the fried chicken, delicious. My wife had the beef dip and wished she had ordered the lamb instead.

if you like Basque food this is the place to go. It is French Basque cuisine and the ingredients and the care that is given to preparing the food is phenomenal ,my mother was French Basque and I have lot of French Basque cousins and this is hands down the best restaurant you can have for Basque food in Kern county. If you want to eat here make sure you put a reservation in at least a week in advance.

Service was great. Food/Portions were great for the price. Ambiance was good, cozy. Tried cow tongue for first time (second course with salad) and it was as pretty good- if I could imagine how cow tongue should taste.Cool little casual hole-in-wall, should definitely try it.

First time going and was excited cause my friends talked about how great it was. Our waitress was very good and attentive. The atmosphere was charming but the sandwich I ordered (beef dip) was disappointing. I took one bite and that was it. 😵My friends enjoyed their sandwiches but it could be that I am not a roast beef sandwich person. I was thinking it was gonna be a shredded beef sandwich. I did enjoy the soup and french bread!😃

Super interesting place. All about history here. Staff is super friendly and you definitely step back in time when you enter the doors. It is a super shady part of town but there's security in the parking lot so you'll be safe. The food idea is awesome where the sides are always shared around the table. The food itself is your typical American diner style, nothing fancy, but definitely homey. Worth a visit.
